Ethics

WABA’s ethics guidelines help protect access, preserve climbing areas, and ensure long-term enjoyment for everyone.

Remove Garbage
Do not litter. Pack out what you pack in. If you see garbage, pick it up and dispose of it properly. Garbage and discarded organic matter can attract wildlife and create hazards for other climbers. Always leave the area cleaner than you found it.
Rock Alterations
Do not alter the rock. Never drill, chip, or otherwise modify the rock. Rock alterations can damage the environment, make climbing areas unsafe, and threaten our access to bouldering areas. Do not use stiff bristle brushes or wire brushes on the rock. Use soft brushes to clean holds and remove excess chalk.
Limit Erosion
Stay on established trails and avoid creating new paths. Erosion can damage the environment and make trails unsafe.
Tick Marks
Brush off excess chalk and avoid leaving tick marks. Use chalk sparingly to help preserve the natural appearance of the rock and minimize visual impact on the environment.
No Fires
Do not build fires. Fires can damage the environment and make climbing areas unsafe. Use a camp stove for cooking and a lantern for light. If you must build a fire, use established fire rings and follow local regulations.
Pets
Keep pets on a leash and under control at all times. Pets can damage the environment and make climbing areas unsafe. Clean up after your pet and dispose of waste properly.
Proper Toilet Use
Use proper toilet facilities whenever available. If not, follow Leave No Trace principles: bury human waste in a 6-8 inch (15-20 cm) hole, cover it completely, and pack out used toilet paper. Dispose of waste at least 50 metres from trails and water sources to help protect the environment and water quality.
Be Kind, Courteous, and Respectful
Be respectful of other climbers, landowners, and the environment. Follow the Leave No Trace principles and be a good steward of the land. Share the climbing areas and be mindful of noise levels and music. Respect the privacy of landowners and follow their rules and regulations.
